Buy Patio Furniture in Winter or Wait for Spring?

A practical guide to timing a patio furniture purchase: check layout fit, delivery and storage plans, and the real offer instead of betting on a seasonal sale.

Outdoor patio dining set on a covered patio in winter, ready for spring use

Should I buy an outdoor patio set in winter or wait until spring? Buy in winter when you already know the exact set, you've confirmed it fits your layout, and you can receive and store it until you'll use it.

If any of those is still open, wait. A seasonal discount you assume exists won't fix a set that crowds the patio or shows up months before you need it.

Buy in Winter Only When the Decision Is Ready

The calendar alone is not a reason to buy now or to hold off. Real-world readiness decides the timing.

Here's an illustrative example. One shopper has measured the deck, picked a six-seat dining set, and has an empty garage bay for the boxes. Ordering in January works for her because nothing is left to decide. A second shopper is still torn between a sectional and a dining table and hasn't decided where a pergola will go. Ordering early gets him nothing. He'd just lock in a choice he may want to undo.

The next three sections cover each check: fit, delivery and storage, and the offer itself. If you can answer all three, you're ready to buy in any month.

Confirm the Set and Layout Fit Before Ordering

Fit is settled once the exact set's listed dimensions work on your marked patio, with room left to walk through and pull out chairs. Run these checks with the specific outdoor patio set and configuration you plan to order:

  • Measure the usable area. Record the length and width you can actually furnish. Leave out door swings, steps, the grill zone, and planters.
  • Use the current listed dimensions. Pull the table, chair, and sofa sizes from the product listing for the exact configuration you plan to buy. If you're shopping a 6-seat patio dining set, use the size of the table with the chairs, not the table alone.
  • Mark the footprint on the ground. Lay out the pieces with rope, chalk, or painter's tape. The Houzz outdoor layout guide explains how to mark each piece and plan room around a dining area.
  • Walk the routes and pull out chairs. Go from the door to the grill and the yard. If you have to turn sideways, or a chair hits the railing, the set is too big for that spot.
  • Add any planned structure to the same layout. If a louvered pergola is part of the plan, mark where its posts will stand. Then confirm the set fits between them with walking room to spare.

For dining layouts specifically, you can measure dining-set clearance and seat count in more detail. If you're still choosing a set type, compare conversation, bistro, and sectional sets before you measure. If the marked layout passes, fit is done. If it doesn't, try a different size first, whatever the season.

Match Delivery and Storage to Your First Use

Order now only if the stated delivery window and your plan for receiving and storing the order both work before your first outdoor meal. Don't count on a retailer holding or delaying a shipment unless they confirm it. When you'll start using the patio depends on where you live, so set your own first-use date before you check anything else:

  • Check the delivery window for this order. Use the estimate shown for your item and address, not a guess based on the season. For orders with us, our shipping policy covers current shipping times and tracking.
  • Plan who will receive it. Decide who will be home on delivery day and where the boxes will go once they arrive.
  • Pick a storage spot if it arrives early. A dry garage, basement, or shed works if it has room for the boxes or the assembled pieces. If you have no such space, an early delivery becomes a problem.
  • Ask about later delivery before you buy. If the window lands well before first use and storage is tight, ask the retailer whether a later delivery date is possible. If they don't confirm it, plan as if it isn't available.

If every item has a workable answer, logistics aren't a reason to wait. If storage or receiving is still unsolved, order closer to the date you'll use the set.

Judge the Offer Without Betting on the Season

Judge today's offer on its own price and terms. The evidence doesn't show winter or spring as a reliably cheaper time to buy.

The price data that exists points to small seasonal swings. Thrifle's analysis of Amazon outdoor-furniture listings tracked 549 listings with at least six months of price history. Compared with each listing's own yearly average, January prices came in at 0.0%, February at 0.1% below, and March at 1.7% below. That sample covers Amazon only, so it can't predict another retailer's price. While individual winter clearances may still appear, the monthly average prices in that sample show no general winter discount pattern.

Sales timing tells a different story from pricing. A U.S. outdoor furniture market report says a significant share of retail sales happens between March and June. An early spring can pull buying into early March, and a cold or rainy one can push it to late May. Warmer regions also support longer outdoor seasons. Busy selling months show when people buy. They don't show what a specific set will cost.

To size up the offer in front of you, compare the same model and configuration at each retailer. Look at the full total at checkout, including any delivery charges, and check it against your budget. A "winter sale" banner on its own proves nothing. If you haven't set a number yet, our patio furniture budget guide breaks down cost ranges by material and set type. Stock and promotions differ by retailer and change over time. A set that's available now at a price that works is something you can act on. A spring deal you're hoping for is not.

FAQs

Does a winter sale mean the set is cheaper than it will be in spring?

No. A sale label only tells you today's price against whatever reference price the retailer shows. The available price evidence does not show that the same outdoor patio set will cost more or less in spring. Compare the identical model and configuration, and look at the full delivered total.

What should I do if delivery would arrive months before I can use the furniture?

Line up a dry storage spot with enough room before you order, or ask the retailer to confirm a later delivery date. If you can't get either, waiting to order is the simpler choice.

Which retailer terms should I check before placing the order?

Check the delivery estimate and charges, the return window and its conditions for opened versus unopened items, warranty coverage, and how damaged packages are handled. Don't assume a price adjustment or delivery change unless the terms say so. For orders with us, our return policy explains refunds, defects, and how to start a return.
