Standard-Height or Counter-Height Patio Dining for a Covered Winter Patio?

Match patio table height to the people who will eat there, check the actual seat and table dimensions as a pair, and walk the layout with every seat pulled out.

Pick standard height if your diners like a lower table and sit easily in regular chairs. Pick counter height if everyone is comfortable climbing onto raised stools and you have room to pull those stools out. Neither one wins for everyone.

Whichever you choose, check that the table and seats are made to go together. Then test the layout on the patio itself. A roof over the patio keeps snow off the tabletop on a gray January evening, but it doesn't make the space warm. It also doesn't change how the furniture fits or how people move around it.

Choose the height that fits the diners

Start with the people, not the furniture. Our guide lists standard dining tables at 28 to 30 inches and counter-height tables at 34 to 36 inches. Those are category ranges, not proof that a certain chair or stool will fit.

  • Standard height: This fits diners who prefer a lower surface and can sit comfortably in regular chairs. It's the closer match to an indoor dining table for long meals in coats and boots.
  • Counter height: This fits diners who can easily get onto a raised stool, sit there through a meal, and step back down. Skip it if a regular diner finds raised seats awkward.

Settle this first, then move on to checking the pairing. If you're also weighing bar height, our table-height comparison covers all three side by side.

Check the actual table-and-seat pairing

The height label alone doesn't tell you two pieces work together. Compare the exact table with the exact chairs or stools, then sit at them.

  1. Compare the listed numbers. Write down the table height and the seat height. Then look for any pairing guidance from the maker, such as a stated counter height that a stool is designed for. Whether you search for "outdoor bar stools set of 2" or browse counter-height stool options, match each listing's seat height to your table, not to the word "counter."
  2. Sit and check posture. At standard height, WOOD Magazine gives a 16–18-inch seat-height guideline for feet resting flat with knees bent at 90 to 100 degrees. That guideline is for an average-size 5-foot-10-inch adult sitting upright, and the source notes the numbers may need adjusting for the user's size and shape. On a stool, check that feet rest on the footrest and that forearms reach the tabletop without the shoulders lifting.
  3. Check clearance underneath. Look at the table's apron (the frame under the top), any crossbars, and the chair arms. If any of these hit the seat or thighs, the seat won't slide into place.
  4. Slide each seat in and out. It should tuck in and pull back without catching. If a seat sticks, change that seat style before you buy more of them.

If a regular diner fails step 2, go back to the other height before you change anything else.

Test circulation on the covered winter patio

Once the pair fits, test whether people can actually move around it. Use painter's tape or cardboard to mark the table footprint and pulled-out seat positions directly on the patio floor. A layout that looks roomy with seats tucked in can quickly block walkways once people sit down.

Walk the route people will really use: from the door to a seat, around the table, and past anyone who's seated. Try it carrying a plate. Don't assume one height always takes up less floor space. Stools and chairs differ, so test the set you plan to buy.

Keep the cover in perspective. Whether it's a solid roof or an aluminum pergola, it changes the weather overhead, not the furniture dimensions. If anyone has to squeeze past pulled-out seats, try a smaller table, fewer seats, or a different spot before you commit.

FAQs

Does a seat cushion change which height works?

It can. A cushion adds height, and some of that height goes away when someone sits on it. WOOD Magazine suggests counting half the cushion's thickness when you work out seat height. Measure from the floor to the top of the pressed-down cushion and use that number when you compare it to the table.

How much table space does each diner need?

Plan on about 24 inches of table edge for each person as a starting point. Give armchairs or diners who want elbow room a bit more. Measure the usable table length between the legs and divide it by your spacing to count seats per side.

Can I mix chairs and stools at one table?

Only if each seat matches the table height. A regular chair at a counter-height table puts the tabletop too high. A counter stool at a standard table leaves no leg room. Choose one table height, then pick every seat to fit it.
